The relationship between the sea and humans has always had two faces. On 17th June 2021, the seiner ‘Siempre Güeto’ sank in the waters of Cedeira, in the north of Galicia. Of the ten crew members, eight managed to survive. One of them, Juan Olveira, reflects on the accident and what comes after such a tragedy. Unfortunately, sinkings are common in Galicia, but no one can ever get used to losing someone at sea or to the proximity of death.

The shellfish catchers from a small village in the South of Galicia struggle every day with the tide, to sow, dig and care for the threshold between the sea water and the sand. This space in which to cultivate a precious fruit, and also a unifying space that unites them collectively, opening up the possibility of emotional, moral, feminine, affective support and a working conscience. A new collective consciousness that emerges in them, thus intuiting that they not only carry out artisan work, but that they are a network of affection that transforms the world they inhabit.

Driven by the wind in the sails and the waves on the shore, Kélou is viscerally linked to the ocean. He has built his life by listening to the elements of nature and multiplying his activities to enjoy the pleasures that the sea offers him in the different seasons. However, in order to be able to live on the coast, he decided to work as a fisherman. This is how he discovered this mysterious world, which shaped his region, in the south-west of Brittany. Whereas, in the past, being born by the sea was an extension of wealth to be conquered, today the ocean is a choice, a conviction.

An approach to the world of the sea from the experimental ethnography, between documentary and poetry. For the first part of the work we had the collaboration of the association of fishing net producers “Asociación de Redeiras del Baixo Miño” ‘Atalaia’, while in the second part we worked hand in hand with the association of traditional boat making “Asociación de Embarcaciones Tradicionales” ‘O Piueiro’. This diptych land/sea – masculine/feminine tries to give visibility to the intangible heritage of A Guarda, creating emotions rooted in the territory and its people through audiovisual anthropology.

Images from a little shipyard somewhere in Greece. Water, bodies, ropes, chains, wood and metal in a black and white filmic poem shot in 16 mm. Between repairing the boats and sailing them, a group of men pull the boats ashore and push them back into the water, once they have been repaired. This interlude is an intense and at the same time delicate space of time, like the choral interlude of an ancient tragedy made of gestures and movements that oscillate between closeness and distance, between union and detachment, between tension and tenderness.

We accompany three young boatbuilders and their masters, who work at three different locations along the Norwegian coast. Both the apprentices and the elders talk about the profession, the tradition and the transmission of traditional craftsmanship to new generations. These boats are solid, but the knowledge is fragile. There are not many traditional boat builders left. Those who possess this knowledge treasure a living cultural heritage dating back to Viking times.

Glaciers show us undeniable evidence that climate change is happening, and that humans are transforming the Earth’s systems. Glaciers reflect our past and reveal our future. Combining historical and present-day aerial views of six glaciers from the Hornafjörður region, in the southeast of Iceland, this documentary exposes a rapidly disappearing ice world. If the climate crises seems an invisible threat in other parts of the world, here it is written in the landscape. These glaciers show how what happens to the ice also happens to us.

Although the oceans make up 70% of the Earth’s surface, so far only a very small part of the seabed has been mapped. However, in recent years, the interest in mapping these spaces has accelerated due to different economic, geopolitical and scientific interests, determined to build a “new continent” to be exploited/explored under the sea. This video essay takes the ocean floor and its cartography as its thematic axis to talk about colonialism, ecology and representation.

Only 25 fishermen are left on Lake Maggiore, the last guardians of ancient, almost forgotten stories and knowledge. A portrait of a world that is disappearing and a life totally linked to the lake, far from the noise of the modern world that is inexorably imposing itself. Fishing is not what it used to be. The work is easier, but its fate is uncertain. Through their voices and stories, images of the past and photographs of the present, the last fishermen reveal their intimate secrets that, in the future, perhaps no one will ever keep again.

THE SILENT WAVE
A fisheries cooperative in India responds to Covid-19

In March 2020, a closure was imposed on all fishing activities in Kollam, in the state of Kerale, in the South of India. Shot during the height of the first wave of COVID-19, this documentary tells the story of how Kollam fishermen faced confinement and disruption to their work. The local cooperative introduced a major change in the auction system, aimed at ensuring the security of the fishing community and redressing the imbalance of power between fishermen and traders. However, the new system had some unexpected consequences.

They dream of becoming divers, explorers, cooks or fishermen. The sea is their hope, their lifeline.

Director and producer. Nominated for the prestigious Goya prize on several occasions and awarded in the category of Best Animated Short Film in the 2022 edition for his work The Monkey. In his extensive career, he has produced more than forty works, including shorts, documentaries and feature films.
