MISSION, VISION AND VALUES

Mares da Fin do Mundo is a local project, rooted in a rural area but with international projection. It is an international documentary film festival committed to the maritime environment and the fishing sector. The festival seeks to raise awareness of the need to care for one of our most valuable natural resources: the sea.

Since its inception in 2018, MDFDM has evolved into a respected platform and a hub for the documentary audiovisual and fishing sectors, as well as the general public. Our continuous growth is a testament to our commitment and the trust we have earned.

In 2021, the IV edition presented a renewed structure, inaugurating an Official Competition and two sections: Proa (Bow), which welcomes works and filmmakers at the forefront of reality cinema, and Popa (Stern), dedicated to the screening of archives and historical films. The film programme is completed with Special Screenings such as the opening films.

This programme is accompanied by different Parallel Activities of cultural and tourist interest, including the training of new audiences. Regularly, the Film Workshop provides local youth with knowledge about the audiovisual trades, encouraging creativity and the implementation of cinematographic language through themes of cultural heritage related to traditional knowledge and crafts linked to the sea.

This year, the VII edition will be held for the first time in the municipality of Ribeira. After six editions, MDFDM maintains as a fundamental principle its commitment to sustainability as a central axis, working in favour of economic revitalisation and the enhancement of the heritage and social identity linked to the sea in the coastal territory where it is held.
